My first month with VIPKID!

September 28, 2017

My (30th!) birthday was a few days ago so I'm a few days late posting this, but, I made it! I've finished my first month with VIPKID! 👏💓👏

Here's a screenshot from my Teach VIPKID app on day 30:

I actually didn't actually have my first class until August 30th (I wanted to give myself a few days to prepare), though. So my first month of actual teaching will still be in a couple of days yet and I'll make a more detailed post then with more details!

I just wanted to at least mark this occasion and say, yet again, how much I love being a VIPKID teacher & how grateful I am to have found & got hired for this job! 💗

VIPKID Teacher Tools: Epic Pen!

September 22, 2017

Let's talk pronunciation corrections! Particularly when students are reading passages several sentences+ long.

We aren't supposed to interrupt to correct them (lest it mess up their flow/confidence) and should instead wait until they're done reading before going back and reviewing the trouble words, right?

Well, what do you all do when there are a bunch of such words? 🤔
(Or just, like, one, and your memory is as bad as mine?? 😜)

Since I haven't wanted to distract/dishearten the kiddos by marking the words on the slide until we go to review that particular word, I'd just been using my fingers, splayed across my monitor. But it was annoying to do, in the bigger passages and stories, especially.

I kept saying I needed to get some pointed sticky notes tab-things to just slap on my screen itself, but when I went to buy them on Amazon  I thought, "This is silly! I'll have to keep buying more as the sticky runs out! There has GOTTA be a way to draw on my own screen without drawing on the PDF itself!"

...ET VOILA, MY FRIENDS!

By the power of my google-fu, I now bring to you my newest favorite teacher tool: Epic Pen!
(I'm not getting paid for this post and that's not a referral code, I just legit like it! :) )

I'm already in love with this thing. I don't use it every class, but I do open it up every morning before I get started. It looks like this, unobtrusively sitting in the corner of my screen (clicking on the pen tip lets you move it wherever you want):

It doesn't interfere with my computering at all until I need it! Then I just click the closed eye (that weird blue thing above ^) and it toggles the toolbar open/on.

(I blurred out everything not highlighted above for copyright reasons,
Epic Pen does NOT make your screen blurry at all!)

^ This was one of my slides yesterday. As I instructed the student to read the passage, I opened the Epic Pen toolbar, and clicked the highlighter. As she read, I highlighted the words she mispronounced.  So, my student couldn't see my highlights, but I could! Then when she finished, we practiced pronouncing "empire(s)", "ancient", and "quite". 👍👌😊

My VIPKID Teacher Intro Video! :)

September 21, 2017

Finally! I'm on Day ~24 as a VIPKID teacher, and I've finally finished my intro video for my teacher profile page! 😌

I've been meaning to learn how to edit videos on DaVinci Resolve (free!) for several months now, but hadn't gotten around to starting until a few days ago. This video is certainly nowhere near perfect at all, but not too bad for my first go with (sorta) for-real video editing! :)

My First VIPKID Prop Purchase!

September 19, 2017

(Well, besides a couple whiteboards I bought during the hiring process...)

Last week I got my first VIPKID paycheck, and though it was small (I only taught a couple classes in August) I immediately ordered my first batch of classroom goodies!! 😁😁

(Spending my paycheck on supplies... yep, I'm a teacher now!)

I was so excited to use this Magnetic Silly Animals book ($10) for the first time today! And, of course, it was my first day of only having older students! 😒 I thought this might be too childish for them, but I just went with it, and they got a kick out of it! 😅👍

The pages are magnetic and cardboard, so I used box cutters to cut our each page so I could show it to the camera easier. I know we should have our rewards system visible at all times, so I need to find the best way to do that ASAP. I'll probably do something along the lines of a string/ribbon on the top corners of each page and a nail in the wall behind me to hang them on. That way it's also easy to grab it and bring it closer to the webcam when it's time for a new face-part.

The Amazon fairies also brought me some Revlon Red 'nail enamel' (lol @ $4 nail polish trying to sound fancy. 😉). It's been so many years since I've painted my nails, it feels both weird and so... well, er, okay, yes... fancy! 😆I point to my bright red lips so often every class... I don't know, my brain just kept thinking it was weird that my fingers didn't match?? Now I have bright red fingertips to point out my bright red lips, and letters, and pictures, and whatever I'm doing on the whiteboard at the moment, etc. That plus this garish orange sweater I wear everyday... I AM NOW A LIVING BEACON FOR CHILDREN'S VISUAL ATTENTION! Hopefully! 😉😄

The best part is: webcams aren't good enough (or perhaps the VIPKID video window is small enough) where the students can't really tell that the paint is already chipped after 1 day (because of course it is). 😅  I guess I should have bought a topcoat, too! But I don't remember that actually making much of a difference back when I wore nail polish more frequently. I am more clumsy and prone to smashing my fingers/hands/entire body into anything I come near than most people, though.

And finally: EMOJIIIIIIS!!! I have had a blogs on and off for most of my life now (#millennial) but when they have been public I've always tried to write so ~*professionally.*~ It is so not my style, so it was hard to keep up the blogs. So now I'm just writing how I talk, so hopefully I'll stick with it- because I do want to record and share my VIPKID adventures! And part of that is, apparently, using excessive emojis! 😁😁🙊😅 I don't even think they were available last time I tried to be a regular blogger. I've been giggling every time I put one of them in here, because it feels so naughty! Like adding a smiley face to a term paper! 😲😱😈😅😅😁

.... It miiiiiiiight take me a while to calm down with these things, so I apologize in advance. 😉 It may look like I'm a 13 year old girl with her first cell phone, but I promise.... I really am a grown up! 💁 Technically, at least. 😜😀
